Installing MOSS 2007 Beta 2

CommunityMicrosoftSharePointTechnologyThoughts

I have successfully installed MOSS 2007 Beta 2 on a VPC image and I thought I’d share my install experience with you. Here are the steps that were taken to ensure that the install went well.

This guide outlines how to configure the install by choosing the “New Server Farm” option and choosing SQL Server 2005 as the database.

You may also want to refer to the SharePoint team blog post here before you start your installation. [ http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2006/05/25/607260.aspx ]

I started with a base image of an existing VPC which had Windows Server 2003 installed. If you are starting from scratch then follow the steps outlined below.

Start the install by running the setup.exe from the Beta 2 install folder.

In my case I downloaded the Beta 2 image and extracted the files using IsoBuster to a local drive on the server. Once extracted the Setup exe will be in C:[path]\SERVER12.

Once you have gone through the install screens and chosen the default installation options and your install is successful you will be shown the “SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard” (SPTCW).

Before you go pass this screen ensure that you have the database login information ready and click Next.

The next screen asks you if the installation should connect to an existing server farm or create a new server farm. Choose “No, I want to create a new Server farm” and click next.

At the Specify Configuration Database Settings wizrad dialog enter the Database Server name and the Database name as well as the Database access account, the account will need to be a domain account. Click Next.

Configuring the SharePoint Central Administration Web Application. At this screen you have the option of choosing a port number for the Central Admin Web App and configure security settings. I choose the default port number in this instance and chose NTLM as the authentication provider. Click next.

A screen will conform your settings from the previous steps. Click next once you verify the settings are correct.

The next few minutes can be spent admiring this screen while crossing your fingers that the setup is going to go as planned. :-)

If the Configuration was successful you will be presented with this screen. Yeai!

Open up your browser and browse to: http://server:portnumber/default.aspx and you’ll see the whizzy new Central Administration page where you can manage your SharePoint empire.

There is an article [ http://officebeta.iponet.net/en-us/products/FX101517541033.aspx#5 ] here about known issues.

Few things to note, if you can’t access the central admin page and get’s prompted for login credentials check that IIS integrated authentication is turned on and the advanced security settings in IE for W3K is turned off.
