One of the Thirdparty tools the author has highlighted is AvePoint DocAve 3.1. [ http://www.avepoint.com/ ]. I have also personally tested out this tool and have to agree that it is a good application but the interface is not the best. Also the licensing model based on sites does not provide much flexibililty for large deployments.

For our corporate deployment we currently take backups of individual sites using scripts and STSADM.
