The guys at ProjectX aka [ http://www.zoomin.co.nz ] have been busy. They have also created the Australian site [ http://www.zoomin.com.au/ ]. Well done guys. Ben Nolan and John Clegg from projectX were in San Fransisco recently at the Where 2.0 conefrence. [ http://conferences.oreillynet.com/where2006/ ]

Ben was a speaker at the conference where he did a session called “Introducing Zopto addresses”. The concept is to build a platform for providing a physical location to anything online. The Zopto network provides a unique url for every address in the U.S. and Australia. On top of this address system they will build a community-mapping site that is easily extensible by third party developers.

A preview of zopto is available here : [ http://preview.zopto.com/ ] (note this is limited to US)

Interesting also that google has updated the google earth maps of New Zealand quite recently. There has been lot of interest in the GIS map data space recently and with Windows Live [ http://local.live.com ] also on the same path this is going to be a very interesting area. New Zealand is 100% covered by Microsoft MapPoint as well. This is just waiting to be exploited for location centric applications. One example I saw on the web using MapPoint for the US bureau of Prisons was of location centric information displayed on a portal. This is very powerful information given the proper context.

Locally [ http://www.aamaps.co.nz ] has done a relatively good site, but AA has lot’s improve on the usability aspect of their site.
